On the first occasion the sitting heads of the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches have ever met, the two leaders also signed a joint declaration in the Cuban capital, Havana.

Francis and Kirill also called on political leaders to respond to the plight of Christians in Iraq and Syria who are being killed and forced to flee their homes because of the Islamic State group.

While the summit has been described as a breakthrough, Francis has also faced criticised for allowing himself to be used by Russia to assert itself among Orthodox Christians and on the world stage.

Russia has appeared increasingly isolated from the West in light of issues including it's involvement in Syria and the annexation of Crimea.
