£3 million of Anglican churches up for sale

Figures show fewer than 800,000 regularly attended worship at Anglican churches on Sunday, which is a drop of 9,000 on the year before.

However, attendances at cathedral services are on the rise.

Father Harry Hopkins, who is vicar at the closed St Luke in Stockton-On-Tees, admits it is "sad", but adds, "the congregation was down."

"There is another church just five minutes' walk away, and the parish is no longer big enough for two Gothic Victorian churches."

The total number of churches now on the market is 19 with a combined value of £3 million - with the average costing around £150,000.

Estate agents and property developers often focus on the high-ceilings and large floor area as a bonus for those wanting a luxury living space.

Many of the churches, including those dating back to the 12th Century, are marked as being suitable for conversion.

The Anglican churches on sale include:

- St Margaret's in High Bentham, North Yorkshire (the cheapest at £50,000)

- St John the Evangelist in Broughton, Salford (the most expensive at £250,000)

- Church of St Luke in Stockton-On-Tees

- St Anthony's Church in Cowley, Devon

- St George the Martyr in Redditch, Worcestershire

- St John the Baptist in Rochdale, Greater Manchester
