Archbishop John Sentamu: Britain mustn't be seen as a soft touch for immigration

by Aaron James

Speaking at the Henley Literary Arts Festival, Dr John Sentamu said that mainland Europe, where there are often no borders under the EU's Schengen agreement, was trying to "shunt" migrants to Britain because they didn't want to take care of them themselves.

Dr Sentamu said that migrants and refugees should be taken in at the first country they reach rather than allowed to travel through Europe in an attempt to reach Britain.

The Archbishop also said Britain's role in conflict in Libya and Iraq have partly fuelled the migration crisis, and it's difficult to know which migrants are genuine asylum seekers and which are Islamic State terrorists.

He sought asylum himself in Britain, fleeing the Ugandan Idi Amin government in 1973, and has also visited the migrant camp in Calais known as the 'Jungle' (pictured, below).

According to the Daily Mail, he told the audience: "That camp [the Jungle] has been a creation of the Schengen countries and they ought to own up to what they've created.

"I think it should be that, where ever the asylum seekers arrive in that particular place, you have a responsibility for their care, their love.

"Every nation is shunting them and shunting them and shunting them in the hope that they will end up in the UK.

"Schengen countries have not done that with the Jungle and I, for one – as much as I am sympathetic and I feel sorry for the number of people genuinely seeking asylum – I think really the issue lies with the Schengen countries and they cannot see Britain as a soft touch."

The Archbishop of Canterbury Most Revd Justin Welby said earlier this year that it was "absolutely outrageous" to automatically describe people worried about immigration as racist.

Neil Jameson, a Christian from Citizens UK, a charity campaigning for local authorities to pledge to resettle refugees, said it would be unfair to say all EU countries in Schengen Zone are at fault.

He told Premier Christian Radio: "Germany has pulled it's weight massively. Germany, as I understand it, is still doing so. They are accepting refugees, giving them the right to work and so on, in a very impressive way. They're leading the field."

Neil Jameson also claimed it is conscious decision-making by refugee families, not the Schengen Zone, which is prompting them to head towards Britain.

He added: "The reason they're accumulating in Calais is because many of them want to come to Britain. It is true that could, and should, claim asylum in the countries where they end up but I don't see Britain as a soft touch at all.

"Because we're an island we're blessed by the fact we do have natural borders with sea around them.

"The plight of refugees should be shared by everybody, frankly, but the most urgent thing is the unaccompanied children who have fled poverty, tyranny and violence, are traumatised by that and can see Britain from Calais and have family in Britain.
