Archbishops hope for "a great wave of prayer" at Pentecost

The Most Revd Justin Welby and the Most Revd John Sentamu have written to every parish in the Church of England to encourage Christians to pray this week for the spreading of the Christian message.

They wrote: "At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus himself taught us 'Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.'

"It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord's Prayer. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ.

"When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory."

As part of 'Thy Kingdom Come', the Archbishops are inviting churches to promote prayer through things such as day or week-long 24/7 prayer events, saying special prayers in Sunday worship or prayer walking.

Seven cathedrals across the nation are supporting the initiative by holding 'Beacon Events' over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith.

Archbishop Justin will send a message via live video link to other Beacon Events taking place at the same time as the Canterbury Cathedral (pictured) event.
