Carlisle Cathedral unveils plans for £3m teaching centre

The new designs for a major refurbishment of the Cumbria landmarks' Fratry building are going on display in a drop-in session from 6pm until 7.30pm.

They will see the 15th-century building equipped with a new heritage learning centre and a new disabled access-friendly entrance for school children and the wider community.

The Dean of Carlisle, the Very Revd Mark Boyling said: "We have some really exciting plans and drawings prepared which demonstrate how the new building would link into the Fratry.

"We recognise that this is a very sensitive site in the city but this scheme is not just important for us as a Cathedral but for the whole city of Carlisle and indeed the county of Cumbria.

"It's an outward-facing project which aims to allow local people as well as all our visitors to experience what the Fratry has to offer."

Design team and Cathedral representatives will be available at Carlisle Cathedral on Monday evening to answer questions.

Architect Fergus Feilden, Director of Feilden Fowles, said: "The design of the link building references the original west range of the cloister.

"It means we're reforming a public space at the heart of the precinct which reflects the historical setting and brings the Fratry back to life.

"The design reflects some of the finest architectural elements of the Fratry building and the cathedral and draws them into the new building."

It is expected a planning application will be submitted in early August and a £1.8 million funding application to the Heritage Lottery Fund will be made in November.

£1.2 million for the project has already been raised through fundraising.
