Cathedral interfaith worker calls for ban on Donald Trump

by Aaron James

Republican presidential candidate Mr Trump made the call after a Muslim couple murdered 14 people at a centre for disabled people in southern California earlier this month.

He said he would impose the ban "while we figure out what the hell is going on" in terms of world terrorism.

A petition calling for Mr Trump, who describes himself as a Christian, to be banned from entering the UK has now reached 163,000 signatures.

Anjum Anwar, Dialogue Development Officer for the Diocese of Blackburn, told Premier's News Hour: "Banning doesn't always work, but in this case... we have to ban him simply because members of my community may see our government's previous actions as double standards.

"We have in the past done the same thing to other people and we have to start using the same yardstick.

"If that [a call to ban all Muslims] was said about another community, how would they feel? He's demonising the whole 1.5 billion Muslims and I think he needs to look at history, and the contribution that Muslims have made in the United States.

Using the Syria conflict as an example, she also said: "I mean if we look at some of the killings, atrocious, terrible, terrible, disgusting stuff... they have been discussing how they feel treated unjustly.

"So I'm not convinced that they are killing in the name of religion, they're more likely people of a particular faith who are taking action.

"We can't accept violence, we have never accepted violence in the name of any religion."
