Chaplain calls for prayer following Tata Steel job cuts

Revd Peter Vickers has been speaking to Premier after the firm announced a total of 1,200 jobs will go and two plants are to close.

He visited the site in Scunthorpe on Tuesday morning and spoke with workers.

"You've got the fear factor, 'what is going to happen?'. You've got the frustration factor, 'why are we in this situation?'," he said.

"You've got the anger that people are feeling simply because they feel others should have done something to stop them getting to here, then there's the whole worry about the uncertainty of the future."

Tata Steel says the cuts are in response to a shift in market conditions caused by a "flood" of cheap imports, particularly from China, a strong pound and high electricity prices.

Karl Koehler, chief executive of Tata Steel's European operations, said: "I realise how distressing this news will be for all those affected. We have looked at all other options before proposing these changes.

"We will work closely with affected employees and their trade union representatives. We will look to redeploy employees, wherever possible, and minimise employee hardship.

Roy Rickhuss, general secretary of steelworkers' union Community was scathing in his response, stating: "The Government should hang its head in shame at today's news.

"The cruel irony of the Prime Minister welcoming the Chinese Premier as UK steel jobs are cut partly due to Chinese steel dumping will not be lost on the UK's steelworkers and their communities. We have been saying for years that more Government action is needed to support UK steel as a vital foundation industry.

"We have made clear that the situation is urgent. Despite these warnings the Government has been too slow to respond."

Since the announcement on Tuesday, Number 10 has confirmed the Prime Minister is expecting to raise the issue of steel in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Downing Street on Wednesday.

Speaking about the need to pray for those who face losing jobs, Revd Peter Vickers - who's part of the Lincs Chaplaincy Team, said: "Pray for those who've started the journey of uncertainty. The number given out here is 900 but that doesn't mean 900 will walk away without a job. Pray that they can keep a calm head and sell themselves.

"Another area of prayer is for the emotional ripple effect that Scunthorpe itself will feel. I'm talking to churches because people sitting in their parishes will feel the ripple that comes down from this. Fear won't stop at the gate of Tata Steel.

"Pray for those who do have the power to make decisions. There's an awful lot of people feeling powerless and they need to know there are those out there who will use the power wisely."
