Charity to Church: Give up profit for affordable homes

by Aaron James

Housing Justice also said it believed there is a willingness within the Church to do so, particularly among those who have been through or attempted the process of getting affordable housing from local councils or housing associations.

It was speaking after it released a report with the Centre for Theology and Community called 'Our Common Heritage', which explored the historic and current relationship between the Church and social housing, and how it could be strengthened further.

The Church of England has £6.7bn in assets, of which around £2bn is in property.

Alison Gelders, from Housing Justice, told Premier's News Hour: "What we're really wanting to see is an indication that they're willing to consider stewardship options of their land when they're disposing of it or when they're making redevelopment decisions, so that they don't always automatically go for the best financial value.

"I think there is a willingness, especially once people understand the implications and what it's really like, because I think it's only when people talk to somebody who's actually been through the process, that they really think 'yes, this is something we could do'.

"One thing a church can do is, if it's got any redundant land or if its planning any redevelopment, it should look at whether social housing is something it could do. But we're certainly not suggesting the Church of England should sell off all its land holdings."

Premier contacted the Church of England who declined to comment, however it did highlight the foreword of the Our Common Heritage report, written by the Bishop-elect of Gloucester and the Archdeacon of Hackney, Ven Rachel Treweek.

It said: "Across the UK, we face a growing housing crisis. There is a serious lack of affordable housing in many different areas. All too often, housing is seen simply as a commodity to be bought and sold.

"Archbishop Justin Welby has urged Churches and Housing Associations to rediscover their 'common heritage,' and to work together for the common good. This report is a response to that exhortation.

"In east London, I have seen at first-hand what the Church can do in partnership with others: how it has been at the heart of initiatives which have secured a Living Wage for low-paid workers, challenged exploitative lending and supported ethical alternatives.

"I believe that the Church can have the same transformative impact on the issue of housing, if we are willing to work with people of good will far beyond our walls. This report has an important part to play in turning that vision into a reality."
