Christian MP Andrea Leadsom gives her pitch to be PM

by Aaron James

The Energy Minister and Leave campaigner has made her pitch in an interview in the Daily Telegraph as MPs continue announcing which of the five candidates they're backing to lead the Conservative Party.

She's previously said: "I always try to ensure that I'm doing what I think God would want me to do... God's there, guiding my hands and helping me."

Before becoming Conservative MP for South Northamptonshire she worked in business and also set up charities helping parents having difficulties bonding with their newborn children.

The former Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith backed Andrea Leadsom for to be the next Prime Minister today, and it's beginning to appear that the two female candidates now have more backing among MPs than their three male rivals.

This matters because it is Conservative MPs who vote on which two candidates the wider membership get to choose to lead the party.

It was originally looking like Home Secretary and Remainer Theresa May (below, top) and Justice Secretary and Leave campaigner Michael Gove (below, bottom) would be the two selected for the ballot paper.

However Michael Gove's shock announcement that he would run - after publicly saying he wouldn't be Prime Minister and that he was backing Boris Johnson - has dented his support.

Boris Johnson announced he would not be running after Mr Gove announced he would stand to be Conservative leader.

Andrea Leadsom told the Daily Telegraph that the next Prime Minister needed to be Leave campaigner, as a Remainer would not be truly in touch with what a majority of British people wanted.

Some have seen that as a veiled criticism of Theresa May, who campaigned to Remain.

She said: "I've been absolutely closely involved and very passionate about the opportunities from Brexit.

"I think it's very difficult for somebody who doesn't agree with that, who is reluctantly following the wishes of the people.

"I think it's quite hard for them to really see the opportunities.

"I genuinely believe that if we want to make a go of it, then we need somebody who believes in it."
