Christian MP on EU referendum: respect this "huge democratic decision"

by Hannah Tooley

Fiona Bruce, Christian MP for Congleton voted leave.

She told Premier the country needs to let the dust settle before we can plan a future outside of the EU: "Basically all that we have had up until now is a weekend for people to digest the very momentous decision that has been made, the greatest decision - certainly in my lifetime -that this country has made."

Ms Bruce said the country needs to respect the decision that has been made.

She said: "This was a huge democratic decision which the country took.

"There are some people who say they would have voted differently - I understand that today the poll that's been taken still shows that the majority of the country would still vote for a leave."

She was speaking as businesses have begun reacting to Britain's decision to pull out of the European Union, with several warning of severe implications.

Many have spoken out and Sir Richard Branson has called on Parliament to take a second look at the EU referendum.

He believes the Leave vote has "opened a Pandora's Box of negative consequences" for Britain, fed on "false promises" by Brexiteers.

Fiona Bruce told Premier why she voted to leave the European Union: "For myself the key reason for voting leave, and I believe this was shared by a lot of people across the country, was a very positive reason - sovereignty, democracy and accountability - to make our own laws, and for people here to be able to hold to account those who do so."
