The Church of England is being urged to release some of its unused land to allow developers and housing associations build new homes.
Housing Justice says the Church has thousands of acres of land which could be used.
It says it could also allow unused places of worship to be converted into housing.
Deputy Director of Housing Justice, Jacob Quagliozzi, said: "Church land is an untapped resource, and if we are serious about doing something about the housing crisis and still protecting the character of Britain - the green belt and open spaces - it could be looked at to make a positive contribution.
"We estimate small church-led development could make a significant impact on rural housing need, delivering as much as a third of the level of housing required."
Housing Justice says a growing number of denominations are already freeing up land in order to help the UK's housing crisis.
The call comes as the government announces a new wave of garden villages are to be built across England to help alleviate the crisis.
Fourteen community developments have been approved, to create 48-thousand homes.
