Christian charity "unsurprised" at child violence figures

New statistics show 60 per cent of children as young as seven have been investigated over alleged crimes.

Chris Muwanguzi, from the Christian charity, Family Matters Institute told Premier's News Hour this is not a shock: "What I'm surprised about is how surpised people are.

"We have a lot of issues around anti-social behaviour, and issues with a lot of young people trying to have a proper relationship with their parents - based on a number of things.

"Some of these children have been abused themselves, some of them are experiencing abuse elsewhere, not just at home.

"And I think that society shouldn't be surprised when they react this way.

"We need to be prepared and aware that children are capable of hurting their parents as much as they are anybody else."

It has been reported that children as young as seven have been involved with accusations including possessing an offensive weapon, rape, sexual assault and robbery.

These figures come two months after a police watchdog said officers were sometimes arresting children over disagreements when parents could not control them.
