Christian led Lib Dems to back extended Sunday trading

Members met last night to discuss the government's proposals to devolve powers to extend Sunday trading to local councils.

The proposals, which would end the current law which prohibits stores from opening for more than six hours, have been widely criticised by the Church and many Christian MPs.

It's reported Lib Dem leader Tim Farron, himself a committed Christian, will vote in favour of the new law.

The Prime Minister David Cameron was forced to put a vote on the issue due to be held next week on hold because the SNP announced it would oppose the move.

Nationalist votes combined with Labour and at least 20 Tories expected to rebel meant the proposals faced almost certain defeat.

It is thought the PM is waiting until the English votes for English laws bill has passed parliament before bringing the proposals again, meaning the SNP would not have a vote.
