Christian schools 'inadequate' says Ofsted

by Hannah Tooley

Nine out of a group of 22 faith schools inspected by Ofsted have been found to be inadequate. Seven are Christian and 15 are Muslim. Ofsted also says 17 of them had inadequate leadership or governance.

It said that in these schools, the culture and poor curriculum were not preparing pupils for life in modern Britain.

It was reported that at one Christian school, the Cornerstone School, pupils were not given sufficient opportunities to learn about different cultures and the perspectives of others.

"Leaders and managers at the Cornerstone School, a school of a Christian character, have not ensured that pupils are receptive to the views of people who may have different beliefs and values to their own. Pupils said that they had a limited view of the world because their education was not providing them with sufficient opportunities to learn about people with differing backgrounds and perspectives to their own," said Ofsted.

"At the Cornerstone School, pupils were not given sufficient opportunities to learn about different cultures and the perspectives of others."

Health and safety was also criticised: "Risk assessments to protect children were poor and not checked robustly by senior leaders."

The school declined to comment to Premier on the matter.

Jubilee House Christian School was also rated inadequate. The school told Premier that it disagreed with a number of the points raised by Ofsted: "We were criticised for having limited opportunities for Science experiments as there was little evidence of this in students work.

"The fact is, we had only been back at school two weeks, experiments had already taken place in some classes and others were taking place but were not observed on the days of the inspection.

"Others were planned for later in the term. At the inspector's request, a practical science lesson was arranged at short notice so that it could be observed. Sadly, the inspector was unable to attend the lesson."

Springfield Christian School also rated inadequate because "checks to ensure the suitability of staff to work with children were not carried out effectively and adults had commenced employment pending the required checks and with poor references."

Ofsted raised concerns about another of Christian and Muslim schools: "Of the 22 schools inspected by Her Majesty's Inspectors, only five were judged to be providing a good or better standard of education.

"As a result, more than 2,000 pupils are being educated in 17 schools where the education was judged not to be good enough. Of these, 1,019 pupils are in schools that Her Majesty's Inspectors have judged to be inadequate."

Premier has contacted the Christian schools involved and is awaiting a reply.
