Christians have 'responsibility' to tackle football corruption

by Aaron James

Stuart Weir from Verite Sport was speaking after eight current and former Premier League managers were accused by the Daily Telegraph of taking or being willing to take money.

Mr Weir has also said that Christians need to be careful not to point the finger at football specifically and must tackle corruption without judgement - acknowledging every person and area of society makes mistakes.

Today Barnsley sacked assistant head coach Tommy Wright (below) after The Daily Telegraph reported he took a £5,000 payment from undercover reporters posing as football agents.

The 50-year-old Scot, who denied any wrongdoing, was suspended immediately after the allegation came to light on Wednesday.

Mr Wright is now the second man named by the Telegraph in its undercover investigation into corruption in football to lose his job this week, following England's now ex-manager Sam Allardyce (main picture).

The former Leeds, Leicester and Oldham winger was filmed by the newspaper apparently telling reporters posing as representatives of a bogus Asian investment firm that he could place players at the Championship club in return for illicit payments.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, Stuart Weir said: "There is dishonesty in football but there's also dishonesty in the rest of society. We've got problems with bankers, MPs, shoplifters, fare-dodgers, people who fiddle expenses.

"It's terribly easy to pick on the ones who're high profile... we all love to knock football.

"As Christians we have a responsibility to do the right thing and to help others do the right thing, but very much in the spirit that lets him who has no sin cast the first stone."
