Church conversations on sexuality needed as transgender attitudes revealed

A Sky News poll has shown although half of Brits have no moral objection to it, one if five still disapprove of the idea of someone changing gender.

Media attention on celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner is believed to be one of the factors contributing to acceptance of transgender people.

But Revd Peter Ould, who writes on topics such as this, isn't sure those who claim to be accepting fully understand the issue.

He told Premier: "If you were to ask most of these people why they believe what they believe, you'd probably get some interesting answers.

"My impression of talking to people about this is while they are happy to live and let live and say everyone should be free to do what they feel like doing and be who they want to be - they haven't really thought through what the implications of what that actually means for all the different ways that people might want to be what they want to be."

He also explained that the traditional Christian view on transgender needs to be thought through.

"You can view the gender dysphoria area as a rebellion against God's created order, so men should be men; women should be women. That's a very classical Christian way to look at it," he said.

"There is a more nuanced view which says 'if we do live in a fallen world, is it possible that part of the fall would be biological, neurological confusion within a person over sex and gender? Could people be because of the fall, mixed up in the sex and gender?'

"You don't have to be a liberal Christian to take that kind of view."

The Sky poll showed a big difference in the views of people of different ages and regions.

Those over 55 were less open to gender reassignment, with only 40% supporting it, compared to 58% of those aged 18-34.

Women and people in London were also more likely to be supportive than men and those in northern England, the Midlands and Wales, and Scotland.
