Church pie contest facing boycott after pasty controversy

Some judges are considering the measure after the most prestigious honour at yesterday's 2016 British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray went to a pasty.

An estimated 120 people are thought to have crowded into the village's St Mary's Church where 700 pies across 20 categories were judged.

Revd Kevin Ashby from Melton Mowbray led prayers for the pie makers and their livelihoods before the competition got underway.

The winners from each class - which included best chicken pie, dessert pie and pasty - were entered into the running for the Supreme Champion Award.

The victorious dish was a beef skirt and vegetable pasty produced by A.F. Huddleston's Butchers in Windermere, Cumbria.

Experts at Pierate pie reviews said: "With all due respect to the pasty company that won the award, which I am sure was a very well made and enjoyable pasty, they should have been entering the pasty world championships instead.

"A pasty most certainly is not a pie. We define a true pie as 'filling fully encased in pastry with clearly defined base, sides and lid.'

"What frustrates me most is that the British Pie Awards are supposed to be a celebration of Britain's best pies, but now all everyone will talk about is how a pasty won in 2016. It's therefore all the genuine pie winners I feel most sorry for."

In response, the British Pie Awards released a statement which said: "For the purposes of our awards, a pie is defined as 'a filling totally and wholly encased in pastry'. On this basis, we are proud to have always included a Pasty class as part of our awards.

"[The] champion of champions will have wow factor, it will exemplify technical skill of its creator and will quite simply stand out from the rest. On this occasion, it was a pasty."
