Church reads Bible aloud non-stop for three days

by Hannah Tooley

From Wednesday to Saturday parishioners at St Michael's in Church in Warfield will be reading from the Holy text to celebrate a thousand years of worship in the church.

Representatives from all parts of the community are taking part in 'Bible Live' and are using creative ways to share the Gospel including acting out verses.

The chapel was built in 1016 and is one of the largest churches in the Reading and Oxfordshire Diocese made up of seven congregations meeting at different venues every Sunday.

Rev Janet Taft told Premier's Inspiration Breakfast why they are doing it.

She said: "It is our 1,000th year birthday and we're just aware over that 1,000 years lots of things have changed, but we realise the one constant throughout that 1,000 years has been God's word - and we want to celebrate that."

The Bible is made up over around 800,000 words, written in 66 chapters and will be read in the Medieval church alongside specially made displays showing the history of the Bible.

Rev Janet Taft went on: "We're doing it throughout the day and night, and we've got about 200-300 people signed up, so we've got hour long slots.

"In that hour we'll have individual, we've got life groups, some will be dramatic readings, we've got children's groups, our MP's coming to join us."

The celebration will end after approximately 79 hours of reading when the Bishop of Reading, Bishop Andrew, joins the congregation on Sunday.
