Church welcomes 'great gift' of Jason Kenny and Laura Trott's wedding

by Antony Bushfield

Olympic champion Laura Trott described her wedding to fellow gold medallist Jason Kenny as "the happiest day of my life".

The couple tied the knot on Saturday at St Albans Church in Macclesfield, near Manchester.

Parish priest Fr Peter Burke told ITV News: "It was a great gift to our church for the wedding to be here.

"For them it was a great day because they wanted it to be private, they wanted it to be special for them and their family and friends and it was."

Instead of gifts the couple are asking for donations to Dementia UK as both their grandmothers suffered from the disease.

Trott is a four-time Olympic champion for Team GB after retaining the team pursuit and women's omnium titles in Rio which she won at London 2012.

Kenny now has seven Olympic track sprint medals to his name, six of which are gold, which means he is tied as holder of the most titles for a Briton alongside former team-mate Sir Chris Hoy. Kenny's medals were won at the last three Olympics in Beijing, London and Rio.

The couple, who own a cottage just outside Knutsford, Cheshire, managed to keep their wedding out of the media spotlight and there were even suggestions that it might take place next year.

Trott has said "it wasn't love at first sight" when she first met Kenny, because he never spoke to her in training.

Their romance became public by accident. They were spotted kissing in the crowd as they sat behind ex-footballer David Beckham at the beach volleyball on Horse Guards Parade during the London 2012 Games.

Trott was born in Harlow in Essex, but grew up in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Kenny comes from Bolton, Greater Manchester.
