Churches should let children "relax" during exam time

by Hannah Tooley

In 2013-2014, school and educational problems came out as a top concern amongst those using the service and it was reported that some children had said they did not want to disappoint their parents.

Jamie Cutteridgem deputy editor of Premier Youthwork and Premier's Childrenwork magazines thinks it's important that both church and parents take an active role in ensuring young people feel calm and prepared.

He said: "For parents to be able to say 'we love you, we support you, and we'll love you and support you no matter how you do in this exam.

"And you're not going to disappoint us, we just want you to do the best for yourself.' "

"As Churches we can offer places, just to come and relax, so maybe rather than running your youth group with lots of Bible input, for the time just have a place where young people can come and relax for the summer and if they want to revise there and chat with their mates there and do exam stuff there, let them do that."

ChildLine carried out more than 34,000 counselling sessions and there were also more than 87,500 visits to ChildLine's webpage about the issue.

Other concerns included the fear of failure and the pressure of achieving.

NSPCC Chief Executive, Peter Wanless said: "The exam period can be a very stressful and anxious time for young people.

"As these figures reveal, the pressure to do well is being felt by an increasing number of young people across the country.

"We hear from lots of young people each year who are anxious, worried or panicking about their exams and revision.

"We want to let them know that they are not alone and that ChildLine is here to listen to them."

It is thought that exam stress can trigger anxiety, an inability to sleep or low confidence. ChildLine is encouraging families to discuss exam pressures and is reminding young people to take regular breaks and stay hydrated during the exam season.
