CofE school builders to get "a fair day's pay" with new wage

Employees and third-party contractors working at Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) Services Ltd will receive a minimum hourly wage of £8.25 after the firm was accredited by the Living Wage Foundation (LWF) as a Living Wage employer.

DBE Services provides maintenance and building work support on all Anglican schools across the Dioceses of Blackburn, Carlisle, Chester, Liverpool, Manchester and York, among other services.

Peter Ballard, Chief Executive of DBE Services, commented: "We value our employees and the people we contract to work for us and being accredited as a Living Wage employer is a clear sign this ethos is valued not just by ourselves but by the Foundation which is in charge of promoting the Living Wage."

Living Wage Foundation Director, Katherine Chapman added: "We are delighted to welcome DBE Services to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer.

"The best employers are voluntarily signing up to pay the Living Wage now. The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day's work with a fair day's pay.

"We have accredited over 2,500 leading employers, including DBE Services, ranging from independent bookshops to breweries, to well-known companies such as Nationwide, Aviva and SSE."

The organisation will be paying its workers a minimum rate which is higher than the national minimum wage of £6.70 (the national minimum wage is £7.20 for those over 25).

Implemented on a voluntary basis, the Living Wage is set independent and updated annually by the Living Wage Foundation.
