CofS moderator urges government to act on Nepal's religious freedom

Rt Revd Dr Angus Morrison has raised specific concerns about the situation in Nepal where plans are currently being debated which may deprive people of the right to choose their religion.

He's written to the Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond MP, and the Scottish Minister for International Development, Humza Yousaf MSP.

In a letter he expressed his "grave fears" at the plans which he said would directly contravene the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Convention on Civil and Political Rights.

"On behalf of our partners and friends in Nepal, I therefore request that you raise this matter with the Government of Nepal, and thus help to ensure that, in its proper sense, freedom of religion for all people in Nepal is enshrined in the country's new constitution," he wrote.

He added that he was concerned the new laws could be passed without proper scrutiny because attention in the country was still on the earthquake earlier this year.
