Curate in "top area for girls" shares self-confidence fears

Rev Anne Fraser from All Saints Witley in Waverley spoke after a new report by the charity Plan International UK revealed big differences in teenage pregnancy rates, as well as child poverty, life expectancy and educational attainment.

Speaking about girls living in challenging areas, she told Premier Christian Radio: "I would pray for them to have confidence and hope to go for it, to take risks, to dare and to look for support.

"[I would pray for them to] find someone who will reinforce regularly that they are valued, that they are loved and equal to anybody else. I think a lack of self-confidence is across the board and increasing."

Completing the top five places ranked best for girls in 'The State of Girls' Rights in the UK' report were Rushcliffe (Nottinghamshire), Chiltern (Buckinghamshire), and Mole Valley and Epsom and Ewell (both in Surrey).

In the findings, which tended to mark inner city areas less highly and the south east more highly, Middlesbrough, Blackpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Liverpool were listed as the worst five places for a girl to live.

Raising concerns over sexual harassment, body image pressures and cyber bullying, Plan International UK says girls throughout the UK are being "failed" and it urged the government to take "urgent action".

Plan's UK girl's rights campaigner Lucy Russell said: "We heard very strongly from girls that they were facing harassment every day, that meant they were facing harassment in schools, they were getting name-calling, unwanted sexual touching, groping.

"They also told us that they don't feel safe online and that they are scared when they walk to and from school. Our conclusion is that despite being one of the most developed countries on earth, there are too many girls in the UK who aren't enjoying their rights."

A Government spokesman said: "We are committed to building a country that works for everyone - no girl should be held back in life just because of her gender or where she lives.

"We have given schools clear guidance on sex and relationship education and products to help them discuss body image with their pupils, so they can learn to respect themselves and others.

"We want to do more which is why we are encouraging more young people, particularly girls, to study Stem subjects and working to eliminate the gender pay gap."
