English boy actor to play God in Hollywood film 'Exodus'

by Desmond Busteed

The film is an interpretation of the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt as led by Moses from the Old Testament Book of Exodus.

When God speaks directly to Moses in the movie it is through a young boy, Malak, (the Hebrew word for angel or messenger), played by child actor Isaac Andrews from London.

Ridley Scott reportedly made the decision to cast a child in the part because he was able to avoid depicting God as "voices from the rocks with thunderous clouds and lightning."

He said: "Sacred texts give no specific depiction of God, so for centuries artists and filmmakers have had to choose their own visual depiction. Malak exudes innocence and purity, and those two qualities are extremely powerful."

Christian Bale plays Moses as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses, setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues in the $200m blockbuster.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is the second epic from Hollywood this year, after Noah starring Catholic actor Russell Crowe.

The film was a hit at the box office but received criticism from some Christians because God is not mentioned by name in the movie, despite references to "The Creator".

Although, Most Revd Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury called the Noah film "interesting and thought-provoking" after the film's lead star, Russell Crowe travelled to the Lambeth Palace in order to discuss with him "faith and spirituality" after the movie's British premiere.

The film was banned in Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Indonesia prior to its release because it is seen by the governments of those countries as contradicting the teachings of Islam.

The film hits UK theatres in December.
