First female diocesan bishop Rachel Treweek takes to role

by Hannah Tooley

Bishop Rachel Treweek is being presented with her staff during a service in Gloucester Cathedral, where more than 1,000 people are expected to attend.

Canon Celia Thompson, Pastor of Gloucester Cathedral, told Premier it sends out a positive message to the whole church: "It will be an absolute wonderful signal, because in a way it's not about women bishops, it's about men and women together, reflecting the wholeness of God in the ministry in the church."

Bishop Rachel is being fast-tracked to sit in the House of Lords.

Speaking in the Gloucester Gazette in July, Bishop Rachel said: "I am delighted that my inauguration service is finally in sight and I am looking forward to it with joyful anticipation and immense excitement.

"It is my hope that the service will resound with thanksgiving for what has been and hopeful expectancy for what is yet to come, as we journey together into the next chapter, rooted and grounded in the love of Christ."

She added that: "I think the Church woke up to the fact eventually that the rest of society had moved on a very long way beyond the Church, and to have the leadership of the Church just entirely male was not appropriate in this day and age."

Speaking about the appointment, Canon Celia Thompson, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled, I can't tell you - it's a wonderful moment for the history of Gloucester, and for the history of the Church of England and in fact for the Church as a whole throughout the world."
