"God would be fine" with benefit cuts

by Aaron James

Gavin Oldham, the CEO of Share Radio, was speaking after George Osborne announced £3.5billion of cuts by 2020 in his Budget, as part of plans to run a surplus by the end of that year.

Britain is almost £1.6trillion in debt and rising.

Mr Oldham also said Britain's benefits system was "far too universal", with many people receiving welfare when they don't need it.

Part of the £3.5billion cuts include a change in the way the Personal Independence Payment, which is given to disabled people, is calculated.

The government says some disabled people are receiving the benefit despite having little or no extra day-to-day costs as an able person however Christian campaigners have criticised the move, saying it is hurting the most vulnerable in society at the expense of higher rate taxpayers and corporations - both of which have received tax cuts from the Chancellor.

Mr Oldham told Premier's Inspirational Breakfast: "It's really important to make sure that when you provide welfare it's targeted on those who need it.

"I think the problem with our entire system is it's far too universal, and actually where they trim down the universality of it and they actually keep the targeted part of it, I think God would be fine with that.

"The difficulty obviously is when the trimming comes in the targeted area."
