Hundreds of council leaders back extending Sunday trading

They claim it would "drive growth and create jobs, bringing significant economic and social benefits by reviving our High Streets".

Ministers have faced opposition for their plans to scrap the six hour trading restriction for large stores from the Church and other Christian charities.

Now at least 150 local councils have told The Sun on Sunday they believe the move will create jobs and revitalise towns and communities.

The newspaper's launched a campaign to support the government.

Meanwhile Labour's Shadow Business Secretary has promised her party will resist the bill.

Angela Eagle said Labour would vote against the Enterprise Bill.

Speaking at the annual Usdaw Political Conference in Warrington, she said: "The government are trying to prevent proper scrutiny of their Sunday trading proposals by not publishing them until the last minute.

"That is because longer Sunday opening won't create jobs, will damage small stores and simply put greater pressure on shopworkers to give up even more of their family time at weekends. That is why I am supporting Usdaw to keep Sundays special for all of us."

The government's plans would devolve Sunday trading to local councils allowing them to decide how long large stores should be open for.

Ministers say Christians would be able to 'opt-out' of shifts with a month's notice.

But the Church said many believers would feel pressured into working.
