Most Revd Justin Welby was recognised by the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University at events this morning.
The universities said his outstanding contribution to society and for speaking out against social injustices, both at home and on an international platform were being rewarded.
The University of Liverpool awarded the Archbishop an Honorary Doctor of Laws during its graduation ceremonies at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall before the Archbishop delivered one of LJMU's Roscoe lectures at St George's Hall.
University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer, said: "In his two years as Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby has had a remarkable impact. Under his leadership, the Anglican Communion has been an important voice in the debate on fairness and social justice.
"He speaks for the poor, the disadvantaged and the marginalised in our society in a way that is both wholly contemporary and resonates with the historic mission of faith communities through the ages. We are proud to award him an honorary degree."
Liverpool John Moores Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Weatherill, said: "The Archbishop is renowned for supporting people and communities and has spoken out about current issues which he feels are detrimental to society and, in particular, the poorest members of society.
"He has a unique understanding of the world and, as the principal leader of the Church of England, he has aimed to make a positive impact in the UK and worldwide. I am delighted that we will welcome such an inspirational individual to the University Fellowship."
Archbishop Justin was appointed Dean of Liverpool Cathedral in 2007 before becoming the Bishop of Durham in 2011.
