Kent church awarded funding to tackle knife crime

by Eno Adeogun

St Margaret's Church and partners will work with young people who are at risk of carrying a knife and committing crime.

The money is part of the Government's Serious Violence Strategy.

Mentoring to secondary school pupils and conflict management training to teachers will also be offered.

Nathan Ward, vicar of St Margaret's Church said in a press release: "This project will bring communities together across Medway and will work with both those of faith and none.

"The partnership organisations are a mixture of community groups and statutory agencies with a clear focus on having the community in the centre. This project is about the local community developing local solutions to issues we face."

Victoria Atkins, Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability said: "It is vital that the government continues to support community groups who help young people build the resilience they need to take positive steps in life and steer clear of criminal activity.

"Early intervention and prevention is vital to tackling serious violence and I am delighted we are able to increase the funding available to support more organisations."

St Margaret's Church will be running the project between September 2018 and March 2019.
