Trousers, t-shirts, jumpers and skirts donated to the Community Wardrobe in Sittingbourne this summer are being cleaned, repaired and ironed before they're re-distributed later this month.
Rev Lesley Jones, assistant curate at All Saints Church - one of four congregations supporting the project - said on a Church of England podcast: "So many of our families are struggling financially on a daily basis.
"You could say, 'Well, the price of a school uniform is quite cheap these days,' but if you're on a very tight budget, that all adds up."
"[There are] two parishes in particular - for example, Murston, is among the ten per cent poorest parishes in the country - [where] issues around finance, family and debt are quite prevalent."
The Community Wardrobe has been launched thanks to a partnership which also includes a borough council, a social housing provider, and a not-for-profit group.
Rev Lesley Jones said the project could be extended to provide things like winter coats and moses baskets if it proves to be successful.
Speaking about it's impact on the environment, she added: "A lot of our children's uniforms are made from man-made fibres that really aren't that very biodegradable at all so, if we can divert them from landfill, that has got to be a positive."
