Local Catholic leader to work in Rome

by Hannah Tooley

Canon Gillespie has worked on the island since 2011 and avidly followed Tynwald proceedings according to Isle of Man Today.

Clare Christian, President on Tynwald, presented the Canon with an illuminated address created by local artist Colleen Corlett to pay tribute to his work.

Canon Gillespie will be taking up his post in Italy soon: "From my sitting room I have a view of the Legislative Council Chamber and, when time allows, like to observe sittings of Tynwald from the public gallery.

"Having been in the Island almost five years has proved a good way to keep one's 'finger on the pulse' as it's important that a leader of any organisation be aware of what matters to people and support them in becoming the best they can be."

He emphasised that trying to create a community and a sense of togetherness was vital to his work, saying: "I have always been interested in the political life of a community and the parliamentary process; how by listening to others in debate one can appreciate nuance, purpose and intent."

His appointment in Rome is expected to last three years, and he said he wants visit the island during the summer break and continue to watch Tynwald proceedings: "The Isle of Man will always be home to me," he said.
