MP calls for prayer for Parliament ahead of Brexit vote

by Aaron James

Sir Gerald Howarth (below) has been speaking to Premier as MPs embark on a second day of debates on a bill which would allow Prime Minister Theresa May to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - the legal trigger which would begin Brexit negotiations with Brussels.

It's after the Supreme Court ruled she needed Parliament's permission before beginning the process.

The bill is expected to pass but the SNP and Liberal Democrats have vowed to vote against it, as well as some Labour MPs - despite an order from party leader Jeremy Corbyn that they should support it.

There have been accusations that the government is purposely pushing the so-called Brexit bill through Parliament too quickly, without allowing MPs to properly understand how the government is planning to negotiate the UK's exit from the EU in regards to trade, borders, laws and contributions.

Others have accused some MPs of unnecessarily slowing down the process when Theresa May has made her objectives clear already, and that it puts Britain in a weaker position if it outlines all of its bargaining chips before formal talks begin.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour, Sir Gerald Howarth said: "These are difficult decisions for all of us. This decision does unquestionably change the nature of our country and its relationship with our European partners.

"Pray for Members of Parliament that they might have the wisdom to make the right decision. None of us are infallible and therefore we always seek God's guidance in these matters. I do myself.

"As we face a very unstable and turbulent world, I do pray for God's guidance that the leaders of all the nations of the world would act in such a way as not to precipitate conflagration: two of which we saw in the 20th Century."
