Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis gives half a million to Trussell Trust

by Aaron James

Martin Lewis has previously supported the charity, and the money will enable it to expand a pilot scheme which has been offering food bank users money and debt advice.

The money saving expert is famous for his website, which helps consumers get good deals on things like current and savings accounts and credit cards.

His donation means a pilot financial advice scheme, which ran in eight Trussell Trust food banks across Britain earlier this year, can increase to another thirty.

In the pilot scheme, 90 per cent of people had their issue partially addressed or completely resolved within two months of being referred to an advisor.

Mr Lewis said: "Over the last three years, MoneySavingExpert has continued to thrive and grow, cutting millions of people's bills and fighting their corner. I am as excited as ever for the future of the site.

"On the back of receiving this payment, the charity Citizens Advice will receive another £1 million. Also from my existing charity fund, both the Trussell Trust and the Personal Finance Education Group will get £500,000 to fund their important work in financial triage and education."

Adrian Curtis, from the Trussell Trust, told Premier: "We really are excited about this because we hope this will lead potentially to people's crises resolving quicker, and therefore less people needing to use a food bank in the long term.

"We're initially looking to roll this [pilot scheme] out to a further thirty food banks. We realise that the crisis people face when they need emergency food is often about more than just food itself.

"It's about those underlying causes, and that's what we're keen to address."
