John Pierce performed at Maldon United Reformed Church with just two hours' notice, after a pianist developed a stomach bug.
Church treasurer, Michael Ennals told Premier: "He had no time to practise... and it was decided that he would perform in his painting gear rather than dressed up as a proper operatic tenor, which is what he is.
"He started and he had the most glorious voice; he was a marvellous performer."
The musical gifts of Mr Pierce, who trained at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, came to the attention of church leaders thanks to his father.
He told of his son's musical gift as organisers scratched their heads over what to do about a lunchtime concert planned by Churches Together in Maldon.
Mr Pierce works for his father's decorating company, which had been undertaking improvements at Maldon United Reformed Church.
Having previously performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Mr Pierce has showcased his talent before people including the Prince of Wales.
Mr Ennals continued: "He serenaded ladies with a rose he had bought and with O Sole Mio he had bought some cornetto ice creams and he was handing these out.
"It caused absolute joy for the audience."
Mr Pierce, who comes from Ingatestone, performed Nessun Dorma, Rigoletto, Italian songs such as Funiculi, Funicula and songs from musicals including Les Miserable.
