Public trust in the clergy increases

by Antony Bushfield

Ipsos MORI's Veracity Index found that the number of people saying they would trust a vicar, minister, pastor or priest to tell the truth rose by two per cent year on year.

In 2015 67 per cent agreed a clergy member would be truthful and in the latest 2016 survey 69 per cent agreed.

The figures come from research that also found nurses were the most trustworthy professionals.

Elsewhere trust in politicians is "approaching rock bottom" with only 19 per cent of the public thinking they were largely telling the truth during the EU referendum campaign.

The poll of 1,019 adults was taken in October. It found journalists were only trusted by 24 per cent of people, putting them below bankers, estate agents and lawyers.

Teachers, judges and scientists followed the medical professionals at the top of the list.

Trust in the clergy has fallen rapidly since the survey was started when it was at 85 per cent.

It has been falling steadily since then after the abuse revelations within many Churches.
