Salford church arson attack: Vicar moved by 'extraordinary response' from public

Canon David Wyatt has told the BBC there has been an "extraordinary response" from the public, following the devastating fire at The Church of the Ascension in Salford last Sunday.

Six fire engines were called to the scene after the blaze broke out. The Grade-II listed building had recently undergone a £250,000 renovation.

Well-wishers have since overwhelmed church leaders with offers of financial assistance.

"One man arrived with three baskets of beautiful perfumed soap and said we could raffle them off," Canon David said.

A church in Cambridge has offered to pay for new altar linen and crowd-funders have raised more than £2,000 for church repairs on JustGiving so far.

Parishioners have found a temporary meeting place nearby.

A man was arrested on suspicion of arson on Friday. He has been bailed until 30 March.
