Salisbury Cathedral building row

by Hannah Tooley

Very Revd June Osborne, the Dean of the Cathedral has unveiled a plan that involves opening up some of the grounds used by the Cathedral School to let the public see the historic building.

The idea also involves a plan to show a copy of the 800 year old Magna Carta, held by the Cathedral.

It is kept in a 13th Century building, the Bishop's Place, home to Salisbury Cathedral School.

But this could mean the school may be forced to relocate, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Parents and former pupils are concerned that this could weaken the school's long-standing traditions which have been in the close since 1319.

Ned Patterson, a former head chorister at Salisbury said: "The school is both older than the Magna Carta and more important to the cathedral's history, if not its tourism revenue.

"To turn a fabulous location for a school into an overblown venue to house a single-page document with little local relevance would be a needless, commercially motivated travesty."

The argument has divided the schools board of governors.

The Dean of Salisbury Cathedral has stepped down from her role as Chairman of the Cathedral School over a possible conflict of interest, saying it is "important the school maintains a clear autonomy in its own decision-making."

The Cathedral will consult its congregation and the school pupil's parents about the potential plan.

It has stressed no decision has yet been made.
