Salvation Army to feature on Paul O'Grady

by Hannah Tooley

The programme will investigate the work the Christian organisation does throughout the country, Paul O'Grady will visit Liverpool, where he first encountered The Salvation Army while working as a care officer in the 1970s.

David has used the Salvation Army when he was experiencing a difficult time in his life, and told Premier that working with Paul O'Grady was great.

He said: "He had so much empathy... he's obviously had his own personal issues.

"Just before filming he lost two very, very good friends... so he had his own issues and the empathy he showed in filming was absolutely amazing."

David, 45, was supported at Cambria House in London and has now moved into an independent flat in Camden.

He now volunteers for a range of charitable organisations including The Salvation Army's Number 10 drop-in based in Oxford Street for people who are homeless and Suited and Booted - a charity which helps clients create a positive impression when seeking employment by providing them with work appropriate second-hand clothing.

David told Premier people should not be afraid to ask for help: "Mental illness and breakdown can happen to anyone, you can lose anything in the bat of an eye.

"I'm just telling people not to do the silly thing I did, and ask for help.

"Sometimes sitting down with your friends can't help, you actually do need a professional."

David said that his problems stemmed from bottling them up and not talking about them.

He said that at first he was worried about going: "I was a bit sceptical because I thought that I would be pushed into religion.

"But I went and it's nothing like that at all, and from there my life's gone from bottom to hugely top."

Annette Watts, Service Manager at The Salvation Army's Cambria House Lifehouse, said: "We at Cambria House are dedicated to caring for men who are homeless - who are vulnerable or in need.

"We supported David so he could get back on his feet and helped him get his own, independent flat.

"We are there for people, and offer them compassionate support, a listening ear, and practical help to turn their lives around. David is an inspiration to many as he now volunteers for us and other charities across London to help others."
