Sentamu praises England's women after World Cup defeat

The Lionesses suffered heartbreak after conceded a goal in injury time in their match against Japan, in Canada.

They were hoping to become the first English football team to reach a World Cup final since 1966.

A tight game saw the teams tied going into the ninetieth minute with each side scoring a first half penalty. But with extra time on the horizon, defender Laura Bassett headed the ball into her own net giving victory to the Japanese.

After the final whistle she was seen in tears leaving the pitch.

Tweeting on Thursday morning, Dr John Sentamu praised the "gallant" women claiming they were the best.

The Archbishop of York is known to be a football fan. He is currently Patron of his local team York City who play in League 2.
