Sir Cliff could sue BBC over raid

According the Mail on Sunday the 74-year-old will accuse the corporation of being in breach of his privacy, if he is not charged over an allegation of historic sexual abuse.

The police investigation began when a man claimed Sir Cliff sexually assaulted him during a Christian rally in Sheffield organised by American evangelist Billy Graham in 1985.

Sir Cliff has not been arrested over the allegations, which he has vehemently denied.

He is also said to be considering legal action against the force after it reportedly tipped off the broadcaster about the timing and location of the raid.

Geoffrey Robertson QC, a leading human rights barrister, said Sir Cliff could have a strong case against South Yorkshire to sue for damages because the documents revealed the BBC was working with police a month before the search, but this was apparently not disclosed to magistrates who authorised a warrant.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Whilst we believe our actions in relation to dealing with the media were within policy and were well intended, they were ultimately flawed and we regret the additional anxiety which was caused to Sir Cliff Richard.

"In high profile cases the force no longer provides privileged briefings to reporters, nor does it confirm information which media sources seek to verify."

A BBC spokesman said: "The home affairs select committee has already endorsed the way the BBC handled this story.

"These communications have already been studied by the select committee as part of their inquiry."
