Sunday "very important" for family, says union

by Hannah Tooley

It is asking people to lobby their candidates to make sure that this becomes an issue in May's general election.

So far 350 candidates have signed the pledge to keep Sunday opening hours as they are.

Ruth George is from the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers.

She told Premier's News Hour that the economic argument is not valid: "There's not an economic argument because if we had longer opening hours on Sundays it would simply spread the hours of opening and the amount of takings that a customer paid in a store over a longer period of time

"So it would increase the shop's expenses to open for longer but without increasing their takings.

"So in the end it's actually our members, the people who work in those stores, who would suffer."

Listen to Premier's Hannah Tooley speak to Ruth George here:

John Hannett, the USDAW General Secretary said: "Many staff have to work all day on Saturdays and need a small part of the weekend to spend time with family and friends, especially if their children are at school during the week."

A Monthly Gift Of $11 Makes A World Of Difference

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
