The 46-year-old man was walking along Bardowie Street to his local church in Ashfield Street, Glasgow, when he is said to have been robbed and hit with a glass bottle at around 11.35pm on Friday.
Police Scotland has said a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested and detained in police custody in connection with the incident.
The incident is being treated as a hate crime, as a reference to the man's colour was alleged to have been made during the attack.
