Conservative MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson's accused Most Revd Justin Welby of 'ignoring the genuine concerns of reasonable people', after he appeared to criticise politicians for speaking out on the issue.
In remarks made earlier this week, Archbishop Justin warned politicians to avoid treating immigration as a 'deep menace' which he said could fuel an 'upsurge' in racist incidents.
The Archbishop appears to have made the comments after the defence secretary Michael Fallon said communities were being 'swamped' by migrants, and their residents felt 'under siege'.
The Government later said Mr Fallon accepted 'he should have chosen his words better' and should have said some communities felt 'under pressure'.
But now, Stewart Jackson, who's hoping to remain as an MP in the Tory marginal seat of Peterborough has hit back saying Justin Welby should be offering less 'wet liberalism' and "more moral and spiritual leadership" instead.
In his blog, he wrote: "As a proud Anglican and someone who supports a number of faith communities in Peterborough, I sometimes despair of the leadership of my own church.
"It seems every Archbishop of Canterbury has an unerring ability to put their foot in their mouth and none more so than Justin Welby, who this week reacted to a government Minister making the self evident point that uncontrolled immigration means people in some towns and cities feel 'swamped', was 'extreme' and fostered racist attitudes and behaviour."
