Rt Revd John Taylor served the Diocese of St Albans from 1980 to 1995, taking over from the former Archbishop of Canterbury Most Revd Robert Runcie.
Before, he was the Archdeacon of West Ham in east London and after his time as Bishop he served as Lord High Almoner - the overseer of a special ministry for the poor.
He also wrote several theological books and was known to be on the Evangelical wing of the Church of England.
The founder and leader of Soul Survivor Watford Mike Pilavachi paid tribute among others to Rt Revd John:
Sad to hear of the death of John Taylor, former Bishop of St. Albans. A kind, godly man who was such an encouragement to me. I will miss him
