The Bishop said Taiwan has not seen an earthquake of that power in the south of the country for around fifty years.

It was felt 300km away in the island's capital, Taipei.

Mr Lai also said that he is a trustee of an offshore disaster relief association, which will be helping victims alongside the Church and the Taiwanese government.

He told Premier: "We will raise funds to help those buildings collapsed or destroyed. We've already asked all the churches to pray for them.

"We will try our best to help them. I will encourage some church members to go to that area, to have some action, to take care.

He also had this message for victims in Taiwan: "Let them know Christians do not just stay in the church.

"We will ask the local church, priests, pastors, and the church members to do some activity to help them."
