Businesses in Texas voice concerns over Religious Freedom law

by Hannah Tooley

According to Christian Today, the Texas Business Tribune received a statement from the Texas Assocation of Business denouncing the two Bills drawn up by Republicans.

If they came into effect one of the bills would prevent government or homeowners from forcing someone to do something which is against their beliefs, while the other would attempt to stop the government from forcing a business to do something which is against their beliefs.

The two bills are similar in nature to that of the legislation passed on March 27th in Indiana by governor Mike Pence.

There has been significant backlash from human rights groups, and corporations have threatened to withdraw investment in the state.

As a result the governor has signed a 'revised' version of the act that states businesses are not able to deny services to people on the grounds of gender identity or sexual orientation.

Rafael Anchia, a Democratic Representative, said the two bills were: "licence to discriminate against the LGBT community" and said many companies in his district want to protect the rights of LGBT people.

He claimed that if these bills passed businesses would think twice before investing and basing their companies in Texas.

Rafael Anchia was reported to have said: "We already have a religious freedom law on the books and it's working perfectly."
