Christian beaten in Iran jail

Ebrahim Firouzi, who is being held at Rajai Shahr Prison north west of the capital Tehran, was physically abused by guards when he refused to go to an appeal hearing owing to the absence of his lawyer.

Mr Firouzi was forcibly taken to court on Wednesday, however, the appeal was postponed until November because one of the presiding judges failed to attend.

A Christian who converted from Islam, Mr Firouzi was previously arrested in 2011 and twice in 2013 because of Christian activities.

He was held in August 2013 during a raid by plain-clothed security officers and arrived at Rajai Shahr Prison in October 2014 after being relicated from Evin Prison in Tehran.

Mr Firouzi was due to be released in last January, however, he was kept in custody, re-tried on 5th March 2015 and charged with "acting against national security, gathering and collusion".

In April 2015, he was sentenced to five years in prison and he has been is in a ward with potentially dangerous criminals

Last year, Mr Firouzi went on a hunger strike to protest against these conditions.

The Christian human rights organisation Middle East Concern (MEC) is urging Christians to pray that Ebrahim Firouzi is soon released and the prison officials may come to know Jesus.

In a statement, MEC said: "Please continue to pray ...God will keep Ebrahim in His love and strengthen and encourage him despite the abuse and lack of freedom; he will be in good health and aware of God's abounding love to him in Jesus; he will be released soon; the prison officials will love mercy, act justly, learn about Jesus and choose to follow Him."
