Christian singer Lauren Daigle asked about homosexuality

by Cara Bentley

Rising from the Christian charts, Lauren Daigle has received immense growth in publicity due to her album Look Up Child reaching number three in the US Billboard 200 chart and the main single from the album, 'You Say', reaching number 44.

In Christian charts, the album reached number one both in America and the UK.

During a ten minute interview on the Dominick Nati Show on iHeart radio, Daigle spoke about her music and her career. Dominick Nati, who is also a Christian, started the interview by saying he had been listening to her for a while as he used to go to Bethel Church.

Eight minutes into the interview, after talking about criticism she's got for what she wears while singing worship songs, Nati said:

"I hate to do this to you Lauren but I usually ask tough questions so is that alright if I ask just a couple of ones that are tougher and you can let me know if you wanna answer them?

She replied: "Ok, cool."

"Well, just 'cos we were talking about Ellen [DeGeneres] ...do you feel that homosexuality is a sin?"

After a pause, she responded: "You know I can't honestly answer on that...I have too many people that I love that, they are homosexual, I don't know. I actually had a conversation with someone last night about it and I was like 'I can't say one way or the other, I'm not God'. So, when people ask questions like that that's what my go to is. I just say read the Bible and find out for yourself and when you find out let me know 'cos I'm learning too."

He replies: "Wow, you're a pro already!"

He then goes on to ask a question about the Me Too movement to which she replied she doesn't think she's been directly affected.

At the end of the interview Daigle replies: "Dominick, this is awesome, thanks for keeping it real".

Since the interview there has been some backlash towards both Dominick Nati for posing the question and also Lauren Daigle for supposedly dodging the question.

Christian blogger John Wesley Reid wrote: "I get it. You were in a tight spot. If you explicitly claim homosexuality to be a sin, then you risk losing a large portion of your audience, and thus losing their ear to the gospel message. I get it. Carl Lentz, pastor of Hillsong Church NYC, faced a similar dilemma while appearing on The View. When asked whether he thought abortion is sin, he replied, 'Before I tell you about what I think sin is, I would like to know your name,' without directly providing a yes or no answer.

"In the wake of immediate backlash, Lentz did tweet explicitly that he believed abortion to be a sin but that he felt the understandable weight of fear of losing the ear of many non-Christians who he otherwise could minister to."I encourage you to do likely."

Nati has responded:

"The backlash Lauren Daigle received from our interview has been very disappointing to witness. I was shocked by the amount of attack and assumption there was on someone simply saying "I don't know". The truth is YOU don't know. You don't know if she was being honest, you don't know if she was dodging the question, and you don't know if she was lying... and neither do I."

He goes on to say:

"I know that Moses thought it was a sin and I know Paul thought it was a sin, but Jesus didn't speak on it. And Paul and Moses didn't always get things right in their writings nor was it always recorded, copied, and translated correctly. John 16:8-9 says "When the Holy Spirit comes He will expose the world concerning sin, concerning righteousness, and concerning judging. Of sin that they are not believing in Me." Jesus identifies sin as not believing in Himself. Not our sexual preference, or wrongdoings, but rather our unbelief. So it's possible that someone doesn't know what is considered a sin and what isn't, and neither does anyone else. Not Moses, Paul, you, me or Lauren Daigle because we're 'not God.'

"Lastly, for everyone that is accusing me of 'setting a trap' for Lauren, I want to clarify two things. Number one, I have had a relationship with Jesus for eighteen years, however The Domenick Nati Show is not a 'Christian' show, it is a pop culture/entertainment show that happens to be hosted by a Christian. The tagline for the show is, and always has been, "Maximum Exposure, Minimum Censorship." Every celebrity guest knows that I always ask tough, provocative, and sometimes invasive questions that produce shocking content and news headlines. That is the show and it was not a secret before Lauren was our guest. Lauren was the first Christian artist we've ever had on the show and she does not deserve the backlash that she received."
