Christians encouraged to live like locals to raise money for Zimbabwe

by Hannah Tooley

Development charity Progressio has launched its ZimFare and ZimFast fundraising challenges as part of its 75th Anniversary Appeal.

Participants are asked to help raise funds to help train Zimbabweans to create change in their community.

Shelley Stromdale, from Progressio, told Premier what people typically eat: "Othello - it's water mixed with flour and the point of it is that it's high calorie.

"The flavour leaves something to be desired, it's very bland, and it really is eating in order to sustain yourself, it's not eating for pleasure.

"There are families that are in real dire circumstances, there are women and children who're having to walk for miles and miles to carry large quantities of water to bring it back to their homes in order to keep their crops alive, to feed their families."

People are being asked to live like locals to better understand food insecurity and the harsh drought currently gripping Zimbabwe by fasting for six days on a repetitive Zimbabwean diet, or by hosting a Zimbabwean-themed meal.

Around 70% of Zimbabweans live in extreme poverty on around £1 every day.

Bishop Declan Lang of Clifton has taken part and hosted a meal.

He said: "The ZimFare and ZimFast fundraising challenges [are] two easy ways for your parish to offer its support to Progressio in 2016.

"As a Vice-President of Progressio's 75th Anniversary Appeal, I have hosted a ZimFare meal myself, and I am now encouraging congregations within the diocese to support this campaign, by hosting a ZimFare meal on a parish scale."
