Cuban church property survives confiscation threat

The National Communist Party in Cuba have now told the Maranatha First Baptist Church that they will be allowed to keep their existing building, and even expand it to accommodate their growing congregation.

Reverend Ramírez Oliveros, the church's pastor said: "They officially communicated that our Temple will not be confiscated and they have begun the process to legalize the reconstruction of the building. We thank everyone for their support and prayers over these months."

In January, the Cuban government passed a legal decree that gave power to officials to confiscate property with little ability to appeal.

Church leaders throughout the country have reported that over 1,000 churches have been targeted for expropriation.

Chief Executive of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Mervyn Thomas, said: "We are overjoyed the decision has been rescinded. We call on the government to take similar steps for the Methodist and Assemblies of God churches and modify Legal Decree 322 so that it is not as open to abuse or used to target church properties."
